The Best and the Brightest

Joseph is a member of the prestigious and powerful Sarque family. Or rather, he was. His family was always one to hate Trainers. They manufactured Pokeballs, Potions, the works. As such, Joseph's parents looked down on Trainers, saw them as trash, people incapable of creating things by their own two hands. Trainers were seen as second class citizens, inferior to those with steady jobs and large paychecks. An odd prerogative, but one that stayed.

The only problem was Joseph was so enthralled with Pokemon battles. He would watch them for hours, trying to understand every minutia of the battles. Over time he began to understand them, and how they worked. He was good at everything he attempted, and planned to become a Trainer from a young age. For years he trained in secret, using a Rattata that he had caught in the cellar. The two were the best of friends. When the Rattata evolved, it was one of the happiest days of Joseph's life. When his 17th birthday began to near, Joseph began to formulate plans to escape and become a trainer.

As the fates would have it though, Joseph had placed his trust in the wrong people. A maid that had been a part of his endeavor ratted him out to his parents, resulting in them finding out about his secret. The retaliation was swift and severe. The Raticate, dubbed "Buddy" by a much younger Joseph, was euthanized unceremoniously. Joseph was placed under house arrest, and wasn't planning on leaving any time soon.

One night though, Joseph's parents were out at a party. The same maid who had previously ratted him out helped him to escape, even helped him to steal Pokemon from the private collection of his parents. Maybe she felt regret. Maybe she just didn't know what to do. Whatever the cause of her change of heart, Joseph managed to escape and never looked back.

Fortunately, all that study had paid off. Joseph has legitimate skill as a trainer, and has been making his way as such ever since. He is still arrogant, haughty, and above the world and views his Pokemon, other than Jeeves, as more of tools to be mastered than friends to be cared for. Even though he is disowned, he rarely shares the fact. It was quite, and Joseph loves bragging about his (well, his past family's) wealth.

Joseph was changed by the death of Buddy. Before he'd been an enthusiastic and kind child, hopeful to embrace the wonders of the world. Now he's jaded, sarcastic. He tries his hardest to keep his Pokemon at arms length, a difficult feat. People are tools, women a plaything. He could go public with his story of his parents now, but who would listen? No, he had to be the best. The very best. Like no one ever was. Then people would listen. Then, when he told his story, the Sarque family business would go crashing down around their conceited heads. Either that, or he could get a lot of money for his silence…

Joseph is well on his way towards his goal. He's already a preliminary Gym Leader and with his new team of Pokemon he'll be the League Champion in no time. He has big plans for his Gym. All he needs is to begin networking…


Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, Joseph is next to unbeatable when he puts his mind to Pokemon battling.

Gym Plans

So many Gyms are sweaty, dirty affairs. Gyms where all that matters is Pokemon battling and winning. Joseph, while enjoying both, finds that there are far more important things to being a trainer and a certain degree of class is required.

That's why, instead of a typical Gym, Joseph will focus more on becoming a high-class club for Trainers. Only those that are appropriately sophisticated are allowed to join, much less challenge. While most Gyms have Gym Trainers used as a sort of fodder against challengers, Joseph's Gym Trainers will be more like members. They receive services from the Gym, private training, housing. Members of Joseph's Gym will receive a host of benefits in return for a monthly membership fee which may be covered by services such as aiding Trainers and the like.

As for challengers, Joseph finds it critical to make sure that no thugs or ruffians are able to challenge his esteemed Gym. As such, he will have a sit down meal with each challenger before the battle. While Joseph is no chef, a dinner is the best way to learn about somebody. If he finds himself impressed by their class and character the two will proceed to a simple battle. If not, the Trainer will be asked to leave and come back another time.

Dinner, of course, is expensive and as such a small fee will be required of all challenging Trainers. And, of course, items will be allowable in the Gym matches to allow the classy an advantage.

All Badge Battles are of the Double variety, mostly because Joseph feels he excels in such a battle. He does take Single Battles fairly often but those tend to be Trainers attempting to become a Gym Trainer or earn a favor who couldn't take him in a Double Battle, not Trainers competing for the badge.
