The Long Road
Growing up in Orre is difficult for anyone, doubly so before Snagem was brought to their knees. The blistering desert, rarity of Pokemon and a thousand other factors make Orre an inhospitable location for all but the bravest, most foolhardy of Trainers.

So, obviously, when Martha and James Walker came to Orre they brought their five year old son.

Max grew up in what would one day become Phenac city, living in a small homestead that grew larger every year. What the homestead lacked in population, it made up for in excitement. With one of the few water sources for miles around claimed by the homestead the area became a source of conflict between bandits, wild Pokemon and the inhabitants of the homestead rather quickly. By the age of eight Max had his Pokemon and trained to fight. By the age of ten Max was sitting alongside the others in the barricades, firing a gun at the raiders.

When the homestead fell with no survivors save Max, the boy was only fourteen.

To anybody else the deserts of Orre would have been a death sentence. To any Pokemon other than Dag, the sandstorms would have torn them apart. Of course, Max and Dag were not those other men, nor those other Pokemon.

That night Max and Dag trecked through the desert, hunting down and killing every last member of the bandit band. They weren't fights the duo should have won, but Max's cleverness and brutal rage seemed to be more than enough to overcome their foes. When those that had taken his home from him were dead, Max was stuck with the issue of being trapped in the middle of the desert with no food, no water, and only a single Pokemon.

So the boy walked, making his way step by step to the nearest settlement. Three weeks later he was found unconscious a few steps outside the gate of Gateon, a Lillipup cradled in his arms.

Since that day, Max has become almost a legendary figure in Orre. He's the ghost story that bandits tell to one another in the dark. If you hire him to get you someplace in the desert not only will you get there safely, you'll get there weeks before you should have ever been able to. The desert of Orre is his home, and those that threaten it should be wary. Of course, his legendary status doesn't seem to phaze Max in any way; he's not much of a conversationalist, and rarely spends more than a day in any of the towns or cities of Orre. He's a warrior, a hunter, a traveler, not a politician.

Until now, that is. Orre, under Max's aid, has become almost safe. There are rumors of a new desert in a new land, with a new League required. Max, while not a politician, is good at what he does, and that's fixing things. A town under his guidance is assured to be safe, and as a Gym Leader only the strongest can prevail.

Gym Plans
Max knows that, in a straight Pokemon battle, he isn't at an advantage. Even in a full battle between a Trainer and their teams, Max wouldn't always come out ahead. No, Max's strength comes in his ability to survive, to hide, to track. All Trainers should be able to survive in the desert; after all, if Max did it as a boy, a grown Trainer with grown Pokemon should have no issue, correct?

Max's plan is simple. He is going to find the closest thing to Orre's hostile desert, and build a town there. His Gym will be the desert itself. Challengers will be sent into the desert individually and, twelve hours later, Max will set out after them. Trainers must either evade Max for three days without leaving the desert, or defeat the Gym Leader in combat. Of coursee course, it wouldn't ever be that easy. Trainers can only bring the clothes on their backs and whatever their Pokemon hold with them. Before entering the desert they will be informed of multiple supply caches, but, of course, all run the risk of having Max present and waiting in ambush.

It's the ultimate survival challenge, and a classic case of a hunter and his prey. Challengers fight both Max and the desert itself, making the odds of victory slim.

Orre is hard, and those that survive in its wilderness are harder still.
